A recent study published in the Journal of Cannabis Research examined the safety and tolerability of topical cannabidiol (CBD) cream in former elite athletes experiencing chronic lower extremity pain. The six-week pilot study involved 20 participants, including retired professional athletes from sports like track and field, basketball, and football. These individuals had sustained injuries that led to chronic pain persisting for at least three months. Each participant applied a 10 mg dose of topical CBD twice daily.
The results were promising: most participants reported significant reductions in pain and improved quality of life, as assessed through self-reported measures of disability and daily activity levels. Approximately 70% of participants completed the study, with 30% experiencing minor side effects like skin irritation, which did not impede study completion. Importantly, all participants reported some degree of pain relief, showcasing the potential of CBD for managing chronic pain among active populations.
This study highlights the growing interest in CBD for pain management, particularly in athletic and high-performance settings. It also underscores the need for larger, controlled studies to further validate these findings and explore broader applications.
